The name is derived from the Greek word "soda," meaning salt, and "lithos," meaning stone. Sodalite contains an immense amount of sodium and white calcite, giving it distinctive white veins. It has become the stone of empowerment for older women and, according to legend, was the sacred stone to St. Anne, Jesus' grandmother. Since antiquity, however, sodalite has been the stone of artists, singers, painters, and sculptors because it is believed to promote inspiration and creativity while providing protection.

Sodalite aids in the reduction of high blood pressure. Necklaces of sodalite that hang around the heart area will increase its healing properties. It also has a calming, regulatory effect on the thyroid gland, the nervous system, and all other glandular functions. It is an ideal stone for calming hot-tempered personalities.

Astrologically, sodalite is associated with Sagittarius and Cancer.
