Obsidian is volcanic glass that solidifies so quickly it does not have time to form crystals. However, small crystals of other minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, and iron, often become trapped within the volcanic glass. These crystals create variations of color and luster as light is reflected off them. This scattering of light rays makes most obsidian appear black. Feldspar creates white or grey patches in snowflake obsidian, and iron minerals give red-brown color to mahogany obsidian.

Healers believe that obsidian helps alleviate pain, reduce tension, release energy, and aid in healing wounds due to its anti-bacterial properties. Obsidian also improves circulation, and can be used to treat trauma, shock, and anxiety attacks.

Astrologically, obsidian is associated with Scorpio and Sagittarius.
