Derived from the Greek word "ion", meaning violet, Iolite is characterized by its distinctive dichroic property. Its refractive nature shifts its colors from gray to sapphire blue and violet. For this reason, it used to be called the "water sapphire." Ancient Nordic people used iolite as the world's first polarizing filter, a compass of sorts, determining the exact position of the sun.

Healers attribute iolite with treating a wide variety of digestive tract ailments: bloating, heartburn, vomiting, and bowel disorders. It also strengthens the circulatory system, reduces blood pressure, and prevents water retention. Psychologically, iolite reduces depression, stress and anxiety.
