Stories containing references to emeralds abound in both Greek and Egyptian mythology: Thoth, Egyptian God of wisdom, is said to had given emeralds to the world; Cleopatra sought eternal youth and beauty through her reflection in emeralds; Egyptian magician Hermes Trismegistos created the "Emerald Tablet," said to contain all the secrets of magic and alchemy; Greek God Mercury used emeralds, thus dubbing them the protection stone of travelers; and according to the Book of Revelations, God's throne is made of emerald.

Most commonly, emeralds are associated with improvement in eyesight and stabilization of vision. They encourage mental growth and perceptiveness. Emeralds are most effective when worn over the heart chakra.

Astrologically, emeralds are associated with Cancer and Taurus.
