Considered the most precious of all gemstones, diamonds are undoubtedly the most durable and brilliant stones in existence. In a legend called "The Valley of the Diamonds," Aristotle claims that Alexander the Great first discovered diamonds in the land of Hind (what is now northern India). Since the diamonds were guarded by snakes, Alexander the Great had his men polish their shields until they created a mirrored surface. The snakes saw their own reflection and, thinking they were enemies, stung themselves to death. Another Greek myth claims that diamonds are fragments of stars. The diamonds' association with love and romance was created out of the legend that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds.

Diamonds are believed to purify the body and remove energy blockages. Used on the third eye, diamonds can help treat mental illness. Additionally, diamonds encourage self-confidence and independence.

Astrologically, diamonds are associated with Leo and Aries.
