Comprised of mercury sulfide, cinnabar was mined in early Greek, Roman, and Spanish societies for mercury. Though mined and processed cinnabar is poisonous and ecologically damaging, it is believed cinnabar still retains many healing qualities and is used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Healers believe cinnabar transfers its healing powers to the blood, stimulating the formation of white blood cells and detoxifying the body. Thus, it increases resistance to pathogens and helps avoid infections. Psychologically, it is believed to ward off depression.
