Derived from the Latin corneolus meaning "cherry," carnelian stones are believed to be among the oldest and most revered stones in history. Carnelian was a sacred stone to the Egyptians, as many wore it to provide a constant source of renewed energy . It was also placed on burial tombs as a protective shield for life after death.

Carnelians are believed to promote good digestion and treat abdominal and pregnancy pain in women. Because the stone is high in iron, it is also believed to assist in the formation of new blood cells and encourage circulation.

Astrologically, carnelian is associated with Taurus, Aries, Gemini and Virgo.
